Melasma, or the “mask of pregnancy,” is the hormonally stimulated mottled facial dyspigmentation that appears spontaneously in some women while in others it is stimulated by birth control pills or pregnancy. The extent and degree of discoloration of melasma is exacerbated by sunlight. Hydroquinone-based bleach creams have been the mainstay of treatment, and when combined with Retin A and sunscreen can be moderately effective. Fraxel Restore is the first FDA-approved laser treatment for reducing melasma, and when combined with hydroquinone, sunscreen, and sun protection provides the best improvement. Continued avoidance of sun exposure and effective sun protection with sunscreen and a hat are key to preserving benefits attained.
